Man dies in Iraq while working to provide for his family

CORPUS CHRISTI Caller.com— Douglas Mills was excited to be a grandfather and couldn’t wait until September when he would get to hold his grandson for the first time.

That’s when he expected to come home from Iraq.

He never got that chance.

Mills, 54, a contractor with KBR, was killed after being hit by incoming mortar fire on July 23, about a month after the birth of his only grandchild, Gideon.

Friends and family will celebrate his life at 11 a.m. Saturday at Corpus Christi Christian Fellowship.

Mills was an over the road truck driver by trade and headed to Iraq with KBR in 2004 after hearing other drivers talk about the pay, about double his salary, said Jeanine Mills, his wife of 35 years. He later did some construction work for the company and was working as a logistics coordinator when he was killed, she said.

“He was in Iraq because he was trying to make more money than he could in the Coastal Bend,” Jeanine said. “He was a very hard worker, always trying to take care of us.”

The pair kept in touch through e-mails and phone calls. She talked to him the day he was killed, just before he left for work that morning.

During the past six years her husband came home when he could, once taking an extended leave of nine months to help care for his nephew, she said.

She described the San Angelo native as quiet — until he got to know people, and as a jovial man.

The couple met in 1974 when Jeanine went to Lubbock for a church program and ended up staying with the family of Doug’s best friend, she said.

The couple moved to Corpus Christi in 1994 and have two grown sons, Benjamin and Joshua. The service on Saturday is intended to be a celebration of Doug’s life, which he dedicated to those he loved the most.

“He loved the Lord and was dedicated to his family,” said Marva Leavell, wife of the church’s pastor. “That’s why he sought employment in a place where he thought he could best provide for his family at this time. It was a great sacrifice.” See also at MsSparky
