Tyrone Woods became a Navy SEAL after his mother suggested he join the military. Friday afternoon, Cheryl Croft Bennett will attend a ceremony to honor the life of her son Ty and grieve his loss after his death along side three other Americans in Tuesday’s assault on the U.S. consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi.

Woods, who had retired from the Navy, handled security for diplomats and perished with fellow former SEAL Glen Doherty, computer expert Sean Smith and U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens

On Thursday, a U.S. official confirmed Woods was among the dead. “Tyrone’s friends and colleagues called him ‘Rone,’ and they relied on his courage and skill, honed over two decades as a Navy SEAL,” said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a statement.

“In uniform, he served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since 2010, he protected American diplomatic personnel in dangerous posts from Central America to the Middle East. He had the hands of a healer as well as the arm of a warrior, earning distinction as a registered nurse and certified paramedic. All our hearts go out to Tyrone’s wife Dorothy and his three sons, Tyrone Jr., Hunter, and Kai, who was born just a few months ago.”

My heart goes out to the family of Tyrone Woods. Tyrone’s courage, selfless responsiveness to an inner call to duty (he received no orders to defend the embassy as he was a retired SEAL serving in a civilian capacity in Libya) is a testimony to the heart of freedom and defense of liberty inherent in the fabric of our collective American soul. That heart and soul of America is part of the success of this great nation’s story. It is inherent in our values and our very being. Anyone, friend or foe, foreign or domestic who ever undermines this pursuit or defense of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness undermines the very essence of who we are. Tyrone Woods, stood strong in his call to defend the very essence of who we are as a nation and a people. Tyrone, you died in vain as we did not come to aid you. However, what you did will live on in my heart for years to come. Thank you. And, on behalf of those who abandoned you in your moment of need, I’m sorry. Your action has made me a better man. I am resolved not to forget you. –B

  2. The article explains that Mr. Woods was at the embassy while employed by a private security company NOT in the capacity of a Navy SEAL. The private security company is responsible for the deaths here not the president. My deepest condolences to his family and children. He was indeed a brave man.

Is the President ever responsible for anything? He has taken responsibility after Hillary did although reluctantly. If resources are not provided and the embassy is under manned, how is that the responsibility of the private security company? Obama was trying to draw down military presence to make it look like we were not experiencing a treat there anymore. Let’s not get so deep in the tank for this President that we’re going to give him a pass every time things get a bit tough for him. He needs to be held accountable just like everyone else. Why wasn’t help sent?
